Artist Statement:
I paint to excavate the emotional landscape of my life, reconciling feelings about who I was in my former drinking days with the person I am now in long term recovery. I lay a framework for each painting by naming it at the start, physically embedding the name deep within and layering over top, reminding myself that "I will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it." Shocking pinks, rich greens and sunshiney golds layers of acrylics and oils are applied, as I build up paint, then scrape it back to reveal what’s underneath. Circular forms are added with paint or inks - declaring space, wanting to be seen. Additional geometric shapes are elemental to my work - some rigid and unbending, others soft and all encompassing, symbolic to my recovery. These forms and shapes are ever-present, either in the underpainting or on the surface, reminding me that I have everything I need and that I am whole. Painting helps me punctuate a memory and draws upon my lifelong passion of being the historian of my experiences, helping me to organize the chaos of my memories and removing the heaviness that used to just lay in wait. It translates the road I traveled while drinking and serves as a platform for exploring the beautiful deliverance I have experienced.
